Remus J. Lupin ([info]howlsoftly) wrote,

Ah, humanity.

It was only a few days before the new moon, and Remus was feeling very civilized, thank you very much. He celebrated this rare bout of freedom by holing himself up in the library, surrounded by the lovely smell of old books and old magic. He had built something of a fortress out of books and parchments, walling himself in with stacks of tomes on ancient wizarding law. The library was peaceful and quiet, it being a Saturday and most of the more boisterousness having been moved to a snowball war outside. The silence, however, was broken by footsteps, and Remus looked up.

"Lupin!" Noreen said quite loudly. The sound of a quill scratching roughly against a piece of parchment could be heard at the next table over. Along with a slamming of a book and a stomping of feet. "Something is stuck up her bum." Noreen said turning to watch the girl leave. Leaning over the tower of books that surrounded the ickle Gryffindor. Noreen smirked at the boy. "You know Lupin, life isn't all about books and studying."

"Yes," said Remus evenly, not bothering to look up from his work, "I've even heard tell of a world outside the library-- intrepid Gryffindors bring me back tales of the Outside. It sounds fascinating, but dangerous." He scribbled for a moment before continuing.

"I think I'm quite comfortable here, anyways."

"Well, I believe that you are actually afraid of giving up your chair. I remember the little fit you had when you found me sitting in it. Such a terrible thing it was. I think I almost saw a tear forming that day." Noreen said, a fake frown on her face, mocking the poor boy.

"Your eyesight is obviously failing, then," Remus frowned. "Which is a pity, really, because you'd look ridiculous in eyeglasses. They'd bring out your eyes, you see."

He still hadn't looked up, but Remus could see Devitt just out of the corner of his eye. He bent down to inspect a few runes intently.

"Oh silly Remus. I know you are only trying to hide it. I would too." Walking around the stack of books, soon standing right behing the boy. Her hands were on the back of his chair. "You know, we have a commonality."

Remus flinched at the... closeness. It made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, to have an enemy immediately behind him, with clear acces... and it was waking up animalistic instincts (turn around and go for the neck, teeth. in. jugular.) that should not have been active this far from the full moon. He surprised himself when his voice came out in a low growl.

"Back. Off."

He choked back the anger, the horrid bloodthirstiness, and tried to wrest it back into control. He tried again, and his voice came out timid, meak, this time. "Please... just go away."

She stepped back slightly. Eyeing the boy still, she circled around the table and firmly placed her hands down on the table infront of him. She was serious at this point. "There have been stories flying about the castle. I really do think Sabrina would hate it if you disliked her friends." She had a smirk on her face. She removed her hands from the table. "Just something to keep in mind."

"Stories!" Remus yelped, feeling slightly panicky. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he realized that he hadn't turned of the adrenaline-- simply turned his reaction from fight to flight. The choice between predator and prey wasn't a good one. "What stories?"

And why was his voice this high? It certainly wasn't fair that he was always either a carnivorous beast or... a mouse. Why nothing in between seemed to work very well, he didn't care to examine.

Sabrina walked into the library empty-handed. A rather rare sight for this Ravenclaw, or in fact any Ravenclaw. She scanned the library as if looking for something and then her gaze fell upon Noreen and Remus, two of her favorite people. Forgetting what her original search was, she trailed over to the pair.

"Hey guys!" she said brightly, with a wave.

"Sabrina!" Remus leapt up, grateful to have been excused from what was quickly becoming a difficult conversation. "How are you?"

Sabrina wrapped her arms around Remus giving him a quick hug and a peck on the cheek. Pulling away she beamed, "I'm great how about you two?" she adressed the question to both friends, so as not to appear to be leaving Noreen out.

"Much better now you're here," Remus muttered, wanting very much to just burrow into Sabrina's shoulder and hide there.
